Joaquin Turns One!

Sunday, October 20, 2013

Egzzzzoited to have finally received the complete copy of photos for our little man Joaquin's first ever birthday celebration! While I've been sharing bits & pieces of the (stressful but exciting) planning of some aspects in my previous posts, here are the full on details of the actual event themed with Despicable Me (as this is the only movie that Joaquin can sit through from beginning to end since he was 6 months old until now) & everyone who helped make it possible.

The venue we had chosen was Timezone's Party place in Eastwood Mall, which had a readily available package inclusive of use of their space which could fit 75 people for 1-2 hours, party banner for the celebrant, tables & chairs, sound system, a few balloons (which I think were permanently affixed in their ceiling), party hats, and Powercards™ which were good for either unlimited arcade gaming for x number of hours (depending on the package) or a fixed P200 value. For more details on the packages, see my previous entry here.

Timezone had also provided a party host, which we initially didn't plan on getting since we just had a few kids of close family friends attending. However, as our guest list grew longer, I thought this much number of kids would probably get bored with just the adults eating & socializing all throughout the party. For an additional fee, the attending officer from Timezone's admin referred their host who immediately coordinated with me regarding the suggested flow of program, kiddie games, and other similar details. I was pleased that the host was professional, articulate, fun, flexible with the on-the-spot adjustments we had to make, & effective in managing the party program.

We got to the venue pretty early & I was happy that my balloons supplier was well on their way to finishing setting up everything I ordered from them. All my anxiety about having the place ready in time for the arrival of the guests just easily evaporated. Smile Party was the balloon decorator I had hired, & they did a splendid job in livening up the place. You can check out their Facebook page here to see samples of their work & contact details.

Aaaaand, what is a kiddie birthday without a birthday cake? I love, love, loved the one designed & made by Tazzy Cakes, who I had blogged about a couple of weeks ago here. The cake was entirely their idea, & I really like how it turned out. It was delivered to the venue promptly, & I got a lot of positive feedback about how cute the cake was & how delish it was, too - even Joaquin kept pointing at it after he immediately recognized the character, and one of our guests even requested to take the (non edible) minion topper home!

To reinforce the party's theme, we had ordered Minion lollicakes from The Lollicake Factory who made this super cute and detailed Minions on sticks! They also had packages that included a birthday cake, but I had already separately ordered that weeks before, so I was relieved they offered just the lollicakes tower, too. I got 50 pieces in cookies n' cream flavor for P3,500, which already included a decorated Styrofoam tower with a mini-banner, and individual tags for each lollicake, and had it picked up from their shop in Kapitolyo (Pasig) 2 days before the event.

despicable lollicakes! :P

In addition to the Powercards™ that the kiddie (and kids-at-heart *wink*) guests were taking home, we also set up a candy buffet for everyone to enjoy. I had turned this into a DIY project because 1) I couldn't find a supplier who offered this service at a price that I found sulit and 2) I wanted to find a way to make the event more personal - we were after all, celebrating the gift of our first child's first ever year.

We bought favorite candies in bulk at the local supermarket, served them either in the plastic tubs they came in or in crystal bowls we had stocked at home, and provided paper bags so guests could have them to-go. I had our own stickers customized & printed, and individually put them on each candy bag for a personal touch. Voila! Instant sugar rush for everyone! LOL

The only downside we encountered I guess, was the amount of food that was left over after the party. We had set meals from McDonald's, which included sundaes, too! A lot of the guests we invited RSVP'd, confirming attendance, but were no-shows. So, since we had pre-ordered a certain number of meals already, we had no way of returning all the extra food. Good thing we had people willing to take home & consume extra fast food calories for the day so we managed to take care of it. There's a lesson to be learned there...teehee.

My hubby & I were in agreement that we did not anticipate how exhausting the actual party would be, though admittedly, it was a joy to see a gathering of all the people who loved Joaquin on his special day. While the munchkin slept through his birthday song (as in plastado mode!) and wasn't too happy about meeting the Hamburglar mascot for the first time (hilarious, I tell 'ya!), all of us were thrilled & thankful that the event was a success. I could not have wished for a better set of suppliers who were all easy & pleasant to transact with! More importantly, we couldn't feel anymore blessed & grateful that friends & family took time out of their weekend schedules to celebrate with us.

zonked even before his party started!

Cheers to more healthy, happy, and prosperous years to our little boy - Mommy & Daddy will be better at planning & executing any more of your birthday bashes in the future! Haha!
